Recovering Workers’ Compensation Benefits for Repetitive Motion or Stress Injuries

It’s a fairly common occurrence in today’s working world, where many employees perform the same task over and over, for hours on end. It’s known as a repetitive motion or stress injury and can be far more debilitating than a traumatic injury suffered in an accident. Workers in a wide range of occupations, from manufacturing, assembly and warehousing to office and retail, are all at risk of such types of injury.
Though the tendency is to associate most workers’ compensation claims with traumatic accidents, the reality is that many, if not most, workers’ compensation claims stem from injuries that have developed over a period of time. The good news—you have just as much right to pursue workers’ compensation benefits for a repetitive motion/stress injury as you do for injuries suffered in a fall or the malfunction of a machine.
With a repetitive stress injury (RSI), you can often minimize the long-term consequences by having the condition diagnosed in its early stages. Accordingly, it’s important to notify your employer as soon as you notice any of the telltale symptoms of an RSI:
- Tingling in extremities, particularly around joints
- Loss of motion or flexibility
- Numbness
- Loss of coordination
- Unexplained weakness
- Pain, whether in the form of tenderness, throbbing or sharp attacks
Once you’ve notified your employer, you will probably be required to submit to an examination by a doctor chosen either by your employer or by the workers’ compensation insurance provider. If you are unable to work (or if the doctor recommends that you take time off work to address your injury), you have a right to file a workers’ compensation claim.
